Are you an impulsive shopper? Do you love to shop for clothes, shoes, and other fashion accessories? Most women will agree that shopping for clothes is addicting. And indeed some people have been caught with a closet full of clothes and shoes that they don't or can't wear anymore. Some even buy so much stuff that they end up with cluttered rooms and houses.
If your excessive shopping is starting to become a problem, you need an intervention. If you end up with so much debt and you can't save money anymore because of your frequent shopping sprees, you need to get started by cleaning your closet.
Organize your wardrobe
This is what you need to do first: organize your clothes into four piles. The first pile is clothes that you can still wear. The second pile is clothes that can be worn but need to be altered or fixed. The third pile is clothes that you don't want to wear anymore because they are either out of style or you just got tired of them. These clothes can be sold or traded to friends or acquaintances, or you can give them away. Lastly, the fourth pile is clothes that are damaged, which should be thrown out. You will be surprised at how many damaged and out-of-style clothes you're keeping in your wardrobe.
Only buy those that you need
One of the main causes of over-spending is thinking that what you want and what you need is the same thing. Say, you see a leopard print jacket in a store, and you immediately think that it would look great on you. How do you know that this is a want or a need? Think about this clearly-- what do you need a leopard print jacket for? If you can't answer that question, then it's a want.
However, there are certain fashion items that could be considered as needs. Fashion experts often say that the must-haves in your closet include jeans, little black dress, and crisp fitted white shirt. These can be considered needs, because these have been proven to be practical. You can wear a crisp white shirt for work or a casual dinner, and you can wear jeans in almost any event.
Shop with coupons
Coupons are very important for anyone who wants to save. Nowadays there are a lot of women who uses coupons when shopping. And these women aren't just housewives. Women with full-time jobs also shop with coupons. And why not? Coupons are easy to use; you just search for them on your local newspaper, cut them out, and take them to the store.
You can also search for printable coupons and coupon codes on the internet. Usually coupon websites have separate pages for different cities or metropolitan areas. If you live in a large city, like New York, you can definitely find coupons for most types of stores.
Know your dominant season and your personal style
If you live in Los Angeles or Honolulu, you don't have to buy that many fur jackets.
But if you do live in the Windy City, Chicago, then you need to stock up on your cold weather clothes. Also, if you are a frequent traveler, you need to buy an equal number of clothes for the changing seasons. You don't have to buy too many clothes, though.
Another thing is you need to know your own personal style. If you like looking simple, then stick to the basics. But remember that you also need to have a few dressy items in your wardrobe. If you like to dress up and wear a lot of accessories, go for it, but learn how to tone down your style a little. Dressing up appropriately based on your age and lifestyle is also important.
Not all expensive items are stylish and practical
You've probably heard from someone before that if an item is expensive it means it will last long. Well, that's not necessarily true. In addition, just because it's pricey doesn't mean it will look good on you.
So if you see a really shiny designer bag, ask yourself: is it worth it? Will it be of any use to you or will it be just part of a bag collection, which is only meant to be displayed inside your closet? Also, is it really that good-looking? Shiny things doesn't equate to beauty, unfortunately. If it doesn't seem worth its high price, you shouldn't buy it.
Don't buy an item just because it's cheap
Items being sold at bargain prices are always tempting. You can save half or even more than half of the original price. But don't buy it if you don't have any use for it, even if it's dirt-cheap. Chances are you would end up wasting the money you paid it for, since you won't be using it anyway.
These are just a few suggestions. There are probably more ways out there on how to save money while still being stylish. And you can also use these tips if you're shopping for other things, like furniture. Shopping for clothes should be enjoyed, but like some things, it should be done in moderation.
