During the summer months of June, July and August we often go outside to enjoy the sun. Taking advantage of the warm weather, we take trips to our favourite beach or resort with our family and friends. Often we even spend long periods of time under the sun wearing our favourite swimsuits and summer clothes.
But as everybody knows, staying outside under the sun for a long time can be harmful to our skin. In fact, our hair and eyes could be damaged by ultraviolet rays as well. So what do we do protect ourselves from the sun? Here are some tips.
Apply sunscreen - Also called sunblock or sun cream, sunscreen is a skin product that prevents sunburn, as well as premature wrinkling caused by UV rays. Sunscreen comes in the form of lotion, gel, cream, or spray. Similar to regular creams and lotions, it also helps hydrate and moisturize our skin to prevent dry, cracked skin. Sunscreen comes in varying SPF levels. The higher the SPF level, the higher the level of protection from the sun. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before the sun exposure and reapply 15 to 30 minutes after the sun exposure.
Use shade - When you have to stay outside for a long time, make sure to carry a hat or an umbrella. These can serve as shade from the sun, and will thus protect your skin. If you do not have either a hat or an umbrella, try to find a safe place with a shade. Also, to protect your eyes wear sunglasses. If it's not too hot outside, you can wear long-sleeved shirts and turtleneck shirts to protect your arms and neck from sunburn.
Reduce exposure to the sun - If you are going on a trip to the beach or going on a stroll in the park, make sure you know how long you are going to exposed to sunlight. If you can, try to minimize the time you spend outside or try to completely avoid sun exposure. If you cannot avoid it, be prepared by applying sunscreen, wearing loose clothing and sunglasses, and bringing an umbrella.
Drink lots of water and take baths often - During the summer months it is recommended to drink lots of liquid to keep your body hydrated. Drink fruit juices, water, iced tea, but drink soft drinks and coffee in moderation. To keep your skin cool and hydrated, take baths often. Make sure to use shampoo and conditioner that have aloe vera and Vitamin E to prevent sun damage and hair dryness. For soaps, use moisturizing body soaps that have milk ingredients.
